When the Loma Prieta earthquake literally cracked their home apart, the owners realized they had to tuck their new house into the hillside of their property, because the level land was not stable enough.

The resulting two and-a-half story design is a classic central stair scheme, with several small semi-private spaces tucked into its layout.
